Karan Watson's Bio
Since July 2009, the provost position at Texas A&M has been held by an interim. Tuesday, "interim" was removed from her title.
Karan Watson was appointed to the executive vice presidential position by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents during a telephonic meeting.
Since the resignation of Jeff Vitter from the post -- which came a month after former President Elsa Murano's departure -- Watson has been filling the role. She had been vice provost beginning in December 2008.
Before that, Watson held the title of Dean of Faculties and Associate Provost starting in 2002. She joined the Texas A&M in 1983.
Right now, she is a Regents Professor in both the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
“Dr. Watson has done an outstanding job leading our academic efforts during the more than 18-month period in which she has served, on an interim basis, in this important role," said A&M President R. Bowen Loftin in a statement Tuesday. "I have worked closely with her on many critical matters, such as the budgetary issues facing the university, and I can certainly attest to her strong leadership skills, sound financial management and budgetary decision-making skills, and her tremendous strength as a consensus builder."
The Texas A&M website devoted to the provost search outlines the job's duties:
"The Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as deputy to the President and acts for him in his absence. This individual will be responsible for all academic matters, including budgetary oversight for all activities affecting teaching, research, and related activities. She or he must provide visionary leadership to the academic and administrative functions of the University; ensure the recruitment and development of excellent faculty, staff, and students; mobilize and allocate resources; and create synergy among the colleges, agencies, peer institutions, and external constituencies."
