BRYAN - Texas A&M's hall of fame and national championship women's basketball coach has long been a champion for charities including Special Olympics, and that commitment continued Friday with the Coach Blair Charities Celebrity Golf Classic.
Gary Blair spent the morning with Special Olympians at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan. The kids putted around on the greens, dribbled basketballs with Aggie Athletics staff, and rode around the course with the coach as participants in the event played their rounds.
"Special Olympics is trying to be the best that you can be," Blair said. "It's just being able to compete, and these kids are doing remarkable out here."
Thursday evening, a dinner and silent auction was held at the Brazos County Expo Center. Proceeds from both days' events went to local charities including Special Olympics.
Blair said the Olympians should serve as an example to all young people.
"Whether it's golf or swimming or whatever, just participate," he said. "We've got too many kids at home that are not special needs, that are not Special Olympians, they're sitting at home and they're playing with their thumbs and watching TV too much. They need to get outside, get involved, and if they can see these Special Olympians do it, then I challenge all you other young girls and boys to get outside and play basketball, golf, whatever."
KBTX is a proud sponsor of the Celebrity Golf Classic.
