TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY Texas A&M is in search of a new director for its airport.

Longtime Easterwood Airport head John Happ has retired from his post after holding the Director of Aviation position since 2000. He joined the airport staff in 1996, according to his bio on Easterwood's website, which still lists him as director as of Wednesday morning.

The retired Air Force colonel also served as a College Station city councilmember, and has been active volunteer and board member for a variety of local groups. He was Volunteer of the Year for the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce in 2009, and Lion of the Year for the local Lions Club in 1999.

The move comes as A&M explores its options for the future of the airport, which could include privatizing the field.

Currently, two commercial airlines offer flights to and from Easterwood: United and American Eagle. However, American Eagle executives have expressed concerns that privatizing airport services would result in higher rates for their company, which has struggled financially recently.
