Texas A&M Department of Residence Life -- Construction Website
Thousands of Aggies have called Crocker, Moore and McInnis Halls home for part or all of their Texas A&M experience. Now, those buildings are coming down, and a single hall will go up in its place.
At its meeting Friday, the A&M System Board of Regents approved a $68 million project to create the Northside Residence Hall at the corner of University Drive and Wellborn Road. The five-story facility will feature 640 beds in 272 dorm rooms throughout 250,000 square feet.
A coffee shop, convenience store, community living rooms, and specialty rooms for music practice, video screening and editing will also be part of the building.
The tear-down of the three older halls where the Northside hall will be built is underway. Construction on Northside will begin next month, with completion set for June 2013.
"I just hate to see it go down," said Eric McCoy, who worked as a custodian in Crocker for nearly a decade. "I fell in love with the hall."
According to the university, Moore and Crocker Halls were built in 1942, with McInnis Hall going up in 1964. Officials say the structures were not easily modifiable, and that the new facility will be a 100-year building that could easily change with the times as necessary.
"It's going to be nice. It's going to be very nice," McCoy said. "I think the students will enjoy it better."
Texas A&M has not built a residence hall on campus since 1989.
"The age of it started to become more apparent as the years went on, so I think it was for the best to take it down," said Matthew Tovarez, who lived in Crocker just a few years ago.
Between the demolition of the three old halls and the building of Northside, students will be housed in the newly completed University Gardens Apartments, where graduate students will call home in the future.
