Former A&M President Ray Bowen Reacts to Loftin Resignation

Reaction is coming in from many quarters to Friday's announcement that A&M President R. Bowen Loftin is resigning in January.

News 3 talked with former A&M President Ray Bowen about Loftin's announcement.

He said he gives him good grades for his efforts and his popularity with students.

But he said Loftin's relationship with the board and chancellor has been different than when he was president.

He said at that time the chancellors were very hands off.

Bowen said, "I had a certain degree of autonomy and the board encouraged that. My impression, and that is not unique to me, is that this chancellor is more deeply involved in the daily operations of the flagship university. And that's his style, his business, certainly not something I could criticize. It's just that it's different than what I experienced."

Dr. Ray Bowen was Texas A&M President for 8 years, from 1994 to 2002.
