TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY An interim president of Texas A&M University could be named as early as Saturday.
The Texas A&M System Board of Regents announced a special, telephonic meeting to be held Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. The main item on the agenda will be a discussion of naming a temporary replacement to the post being vacated by R. Bowen Loftin around the year's end.
The meeting will immediately recess to an executive session, where behind figurative closed doors, the board will discuss the presidency. Once the executive session is over, regents will have the option to name an interim if they so choose.
Loftin announced his retirement from the post in July to be effective January 13. He had originally said he was going to stay at A&M in a teaching and research capacity, but last week, took the equivalent job of chancellor at the University of Missouri.
Loftin was the last person to hold the title of interim A&M president after Elsa Murano's resignation in June 2009. He held that title for eight months before the "interim" was removed.
Regents are also meeting Thursday to discuss, among other things, approving a new contract for Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin.
