Slocum on Hall of Fame Honor, Athletic Director Opening

RC Slocum found out he was heading to the College Football Hall of Fame when he got an inscribed football mailed to him from the National Football Foundation.

"I knew I was on the ballot," the former Texas A&M football coach said. "I was hopeful it might happen this year, but relieved when I got the award in the mail."

In his first television interview since receiving the honor, Slocum spoke on News 3's "First News at Four" about being part of latest class of inductees. He later talked to News 3 Sports. The complete video from that interview is linked below or can be accessed by clicking here.

"Growing up playing football, the men in the Hall of Fame -- Coach (Paul "Bear") Bryant, Coach (Frank) Broyles, Coach (Darrell) Royal, Bo Schembechler -- I grew up watching those guys coach, admiring them," Slocum said. "To be included with them in the Hall is special."

But the coach was quick to point out all those who worked with him and played for him.

"It's a validation and recognition of the outstanding coaches I was privileged to work with here at A&M and the great players we had here playing for us, the managers, players, athletic directors," he said.

Slocum and his fellow inductees will be honored at a December dinner in New York City, then will attend the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 2 as honored guests. The official induction ceremony comes in the summer of 2013.

The man who led A&M football for 14 seasons and earned more wins than any other Aggie coach is one of three coaches to enter in this class. Tennessee's Philip Fulmer and Oklahoma State and Miami coach Jimmy Johnson are also going to the Hall of Fame.

A&M is currently searching for a new athletic director following the retirement of Bill Byrne. Slocum is still employed by the university as a special assistant to the president, and he says a number of people have approached him about the athletic director opening, but Slocum is quick to address the issue.

"I'm not a candidate, and I shouldn't be a candidate," he said Tuesday. "I really don't have the qualifications that we need at this time. We're about to go into the most challenging conference in the country. We need a professional to come in here that's got the experience, that's done the job, that knows the ins and outs, that's currently involved in college athletics right now and knows what he's doing."

Slocum praised the people who are currently searching for Byrne's successor, and said the new athletic director would have his support.
