JERUSALEM (AP) - Texas A&M University says it hopes to open a branch campus in Israel, a first-of-its-kind project that will expand the American university's growing overseas presence.

Texas A&M's chancellor, John Sharp, said Tuesday that the "peace university" will be located in the Arab city of Nazareth. He says the city, which is best known for being the place of Jesus' childhood, was chosen to help bring Israel's Arabs and Jews together in a center of learning.

Sharp is in Israel this week with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an A&M alumnus.

Sharp says much work remains. While the Israeli government is supportive of the project, he says it will require new legislation to be built. He also says funds need to be raised, since the project will not include state money.
