COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M Student Recreation Center, which opened in 1995, will undergo a $54 million dollar expansion.

Details of the expansion, including what new amenities will be available, will be announced at a news conference on Tuesday.

The University says student fees will not be increased to pay for the project.

Prior to 1980, the Department of Recreational Sports was located inside DeWare Fieldhouse. It consisted of a gym, weight room and 14 handball/racquetball courts. The department then moved to the Read/G. Rollie-White Complex underneath Kyle Field during the original expansion of the football stadium.

Construction began on the current 300,000 square foot Student Recreation Center in 1993. It opened two years later and has essentially operated at capacity since.

The Student Recreation Center averages 1.2 million entrances per year. Each semester 75-85% of Texas A&M students use the facility.
