The Texas A&M Golf Course is looking a lot different these days.

"We want to make this one of the best public facilities in Texas," said Rene Rangel with Sterling Golf, the company behind the renovation.

The 60 year old course is undergoing a $5 million renovation all with one goal in mind.

"We're looking at having a higher ranked public facility," said Rangel.

Sterling Golf and Texas A&M unveiled the new layout of the course Thursday which includes a new pro shop and club house, a pavilion, and a larger driving range.

Three additional holes will also be added for A&M research in the kinesiology and the turf science department.

The new layout is designed by A&M Alum Jeff Blume and will feature more water hazards and a chance to see the campus from a different perspective.

"Several of these holes you hit back into the administration building and Kyle Field so you have the backdrop of campus and you can see it in its entirety. That's what the designer was looking," said Rangel.

"It's the front door of our university and it needs to look better and be better than it is," said Joe Webber, Vice President for student affairs at Texas A&M.

Webber wanted to have a facility that all Aggies could be proud of.

"This is for students, facility, and staff and friends of Aggies who may never hit a golf ball. It's a place they all need to be able to come and enjoy," said Webber.

So far the project has been given over a million dollars in donations from irrigation and equipment companies. That brings the total cost of the course down to around $3.5 million which Sterling plans on offsetting with naming rights to every hole, every bridge, and even the course itself. And just how much will it cost to name the new course?

"We haven't set the price tag, we anticipate it's going to be between two and three million," said Rangel.

But playing a round won't cost that much. According to Rangel, students can plan on paying around $20 a round, staff around $25, while the general public will pay somewhere in the $35 range.

"We're not going to price ourselves to where the community can't play this. We're very conscious about the pricing, we want people to play this golf course so we're going to keep it within range and it'll be worth every penny," said Rangel.

The course is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2013. There's no exact date but if all goes well it could be open in time to start the 2013 football season.
