COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) A sprawling oak tree on the Texas A&M University campus has been the inspiration for a $100,000 endowed scholarship thanks to its seedlings.

A&M officials on Wednesday announced the funds in honor of the Century Oak.

Andy Duffie of Vernon, who's a 1978 A&M graduate, raised the scholarship money by selling more than 500 seedlings produced from acorns from the live oak, also known as the Century Tree. Hundreds of Aggie supporters paid $250 per seedling grown by Duffie - mainly in his backyard.

Gov. Rick Perry, who's a 1972 A&M graduate, received a donated tree that's been planted on the grounds of the Governor's Mansion in Austin.

The first scholarships of $5,000 each will be presented to incoming freshman in the fall of 2014 through the Texas A&M Foundation.
