Texas A&M Announces Black History Month Observances

Texas A&M University will kick off Black History Month on Wednesday (Feb. 1) with several activities coordinated by the MSC Carter W. Woodson Black Awareness Committee and other campus organizations.

The month-long festivities will begin with the Black History Month Kick Off, at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Rudder Theatre. Sponsored by the Black Student Alliance Council, the event will feature actress Kathryn Woods’ presentation of “Sojourner Truth.” Admission is free and open to the public. Woods will dramatically recreate the life and words of Sojourner Truth, a well-known abolitionist and advocate for women’s rights who was a daughter of slaves and spent her childhood as an abused chattel of several masters. Using Truth’s own words and spiritual music, Woods recalls Truth’s early days as a slave, her relationship with God and other poignant stories.

The First Friday Lecture Series, a program of the African-American Professional Organization held the first Friday of the month and sponsored by the Division of Research, will feature Domonic A. Bearfield, an associate professor at the Bush School of Governmental and Public Service, speaking on “What Do You Mean by Black? Thoughts on Race and Public Policy in the 21st Century.” The lecture will be held from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 in KAMU-TV Studio A.

Bearfield’s research is focused on improving the understanding of race, representation and reform in the field of public administration. An active researcher with a distinct point of view, Bearfield has been identified as one of public administration’s emerging scholars. In addition to his research, he is described as a passionate teacher and is a recipient of Texas A&M’s Bush School 2008 Silver Star Award, an annual student-presented faculty award for excellence in teaching. Lunch will be provided at 11:45 a.m. to registrants. To register for the event, visit http://vpr.tamu.edu/resources/firstfriday. Black History Month events will continue throughout the month of February, including the Black History Game Show from 8-10:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, in Studio 12 of the Commons. The game show is a friendly competition in which students use their knowledge and accumulate more of important people, places and events in the history of the African Diaspora. Another event, Rap Sessions Present: From Precious II For Colored Girls, is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Geren Auditorium of Langford Architecture Center Building A. Designed as a town hall gathering, the event will include several activities like a panel of scholars and journalists who will challenge students to examine and consider evolving ideas of “blackness” and how this redefinition of black culture, politics and ethnicity has affected the ways blacks are perceived and discussed in today’s national culture.
