Several student organizations at Texas A&M University are joining in the national observance to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks.

Activities begin today (Friday) with students having the opportunity to place small American flags in the Academic Plaza area near the Sul Ross statue.

Early Sunday (Sept. 11) morning, members of the Corps of Cadets will place a wreath at the Freedom from Terrorism Memorial near the Quad. That will be followed Sunday evening with the cadets holding a formation on the quad while “Echo Taps” is played in memory of those who died.

The Freedom from Terrorism Memorial is located at the corner of Coke and Lubbock streets near the Quadrangle. It includes a 22-foot vertical concrete wall with a break between two slabs and has an array of 36 cubes. It is a tribute to the response to the 9/11 attacks. In 2006, students submitted designs for a memorial and out of 27 entries, the design by architecture graduate students Jorge Martinez, David McMillin, Hernan Molina and Mariano Ortiz was chosen.

Also on Sunday, the Memorial Student Center Leadership Development & Service Programming Council will honor fallen firefighters by helping the first responders in the local community. They will take food and supplies to local firefighters to thank them for their service.

The Leadership Development & Service Programming Council will then offer the campus community an opportunity to remember those who died in 9/11 attacks on Monday (Sept. 12). During the day, the names of the fallen will be read in the Academic Plaza and the students will pass out ribbons as a remembrance.
