COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Clinching the Texas A&M softball team’s annual Maroon & White Series, White won two straight games, Thursday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Trailing Maroon by a game heading into Thursday’s action, White won game four, 7-2, to force game five, and finished the series with a 5-3 game-five victory.
Maroon was scoreless until the top of the sixth in game four, and the two runs plated on a double by senior Amber Garza and a single by Suzanne White weren’t enough.
White got out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when freshman April Ryan sent a run home on a double to right-center, and then scored an unearned run on a passed ball.
Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the fourth, White didn’t score again until the fifth when the designated home team put up four runs to surge to a 6-0 lead. A solo home run by senior Cassie Tysarczyk and RBI hits by senior Taran Tyler and Ryan plated the first three before a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Cali Lanphear sealed the deal.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth in the form of White’s second home run of the day, a solo shot to left by freshman Reagan Boenker.
Sophomore Kristen Davenport threw a full game for the win for White, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one. Maroon starter Sara Mireles took the loss, giving up one earned run on three hits and two walks in three innings of work.
White came out swinging for the fences again in the final game of the series and, despite a late rally by Maroon, claimed a 5-3 victory. A pair of errors allowed two unearned runs by Boenker and freshman Abby Donnell, who each reached on base hits in the top of the second.
Boenker scored her second unearned run of the game in the top of the third after reaching on a fielder’s choice, to give White a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Breanna Dozier hit the team’s third home run of the day, slamming a pitch over left field in the top of the sixth to plate two runs and stretch White’s lead to 5-0.
Maroon mounted a comeback in the final two innings of the game, scoring three runs to narrow the gap with White. Senior Amber Garza picked up an RBI when her sixth-inning base hit scored senior Emily Albus, who reached on a double, from second.
Suzanne White came through again in the seventh, reaching on a base hit and scoring the 2-5 run on a bases-loaded walk by Garza. Another bases-loaded walk by senior Nicole Morgan pushed the 3-5 run home, but the third out came too soon and White clinched the series.
Donnell pitched all but the last out to earn the win for White, giving up just one earned run on eight hits and six walks, while striking out one. Redshirt junior Rachel Fox suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs on six hits and a walk in three innings of effort.
