We are less than two weeks away from the implosion of the Plaza Hotel and Friday KBTX News 3 has learned just who will push the button to bring down the hotel.
We also now know what streets will be closed during the implosion.
At 4:30 a.m. on Thursday May 24th, University Drive will be closed from South College Main all the way to Eisenhower.
Texas Avenue will be closed from Live Oak to Cooner Street.
Once the plaza is imploded, the streets will remain closed an additional15 minutes and are scheduled to reopen at 6:45 a.m.
To watch the implosion, an area near the A&M polo fields, across University Drive from the Plaza Hotel will be available for those wanting to attend. Parking will be allowed in a parking lot near the Bonfire Memorial. You will be able to access the lot through the east gate entrance and coming east on University from Wellborn Road.
As crews strip the high rise known as the Plaza Hotel down for its demise, the College Station sky is already starting to open up.
"It reminds me of when we were going up with it," said 92-year-old Joe Ferreri.
Ferreri built the hotel back in 1980 and he'll be pushing one of the three buttons to bring down the building.
"I think it's an honor. I appreciate the owners giving me permission to do so. To have that kind of a heart to let me do it," said Ferreri.
Joe will be joined by Texas A&M chancellor John Sharp and College Station Mayor Nancy Berry.
When Joe was told he'd have a role in the plaza's final moments, all the memories came flooding back.
"All I did was keep thinking about that building, the things it's been through, different owners, and now starting all over again. Brand new, when it goes down," said Ferreri.
