Residents of Coalcliff, 75 kilometres (47 miles) south of Sydney, were treated to the unusual spectacle of a water spout on Sunday afternoon.
A local filmed the water spout which was a few kilometres out to sea.
The phenomenon is created by rain clouds and shifting winds.
Those watching were also shocked to see a boat dangerously close to the twister.
However, there were no reports of anyone being injured.
