The Brazos Valley Bombers announced today that they offered the “The Tonight Show” host Conon O’Brien a position as the team’s new Public Address Announcer.
Amid recent reports that NBC has decided to move his show back 30 minutes to accommodate Jay Leno, O’Brien has expressed disappointment with the decision. O’Brien stated that "I sincerely believe that delaying “The Tonight Show” into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. “The Tonight Show” at 12:05 simply isn’t “The Tonight Show”."
While the Bombers won’t be able to match the $8 million per year salary that O’Brien has been receiving, they have offered to begin all their games at 11:35 pm ET, giving the popular comedian an opportunity to perform during the premier time slot of the night. Also, as an incentive, O’Brien will receive access to all of the pre-game picnics, which include all-you-can-eat food on the Bombers’ party deck.
Bombers owner Uri Geva is particularly excited about the possibilities, saying “Conan O’Brien and the Brazos Valley Bombers are a championship combination!”
Although some may doubt O’Brien’s ability to adapt in the sports industry, the Bombers feel that he will be able to learn, with the season set to begin on June 2.
While the Bombers await O’Brien’s answer, they will be holding try-outs for the position in case O’Brien decides to stay on NBC, although most pundits insist that he won’t even think twice about accepting the job in the Brazos Valley.
