On May 16, 1929 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the first Academy Awards, honoring the best movies released in 1927 and 1928. Held at Los Angeles' Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the first awards ceremony was attended by 270 guests, who each paid $5 for a ticket. "Wings" was awarded Best Picture, which at the time was called Outstanding Picture.
In the years since, the Oscars have become the defining awards show for Hollywood and the film industry. The highly anticipated event is now a red-carpet affair, complete with big name performers, honored hosts, and hotly contested awards. The next Academy Awards will be held on March 2, 2014.
