Journalism Study Shows Impact of Cutbacks in News

NEW YORK (AP) - A new study is detailing how years of cutbacks have affected the quality of television and newspaper news and how consumers view the work.

The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism on Monday found that nearly one-third of consumers said they have abandoned a news outlet because it no longer gave them what they want. Many of them say there are fewer or less complete stories.

The study found that local news has become increasingly focused on weather, sports and traffic. In cable news, there is an increased focus on talk and much less on news coverage.

While the financial picture is no rosier, the project's acting director Amy Mitchell says it is time to focus on quality.
