NEW YORK (AP) - News is a growth industry at local TV news stations.

A survey released Wednesday found the average broadcast station in the United States has added nearly an hour's worth of newscast time to its day over the past three years. On weekdays, the typical station airs five and a half hours of local news.

The survey was conducted by the Radio Television Digital News Association and Hofstra University. Morning was the biggest growth area for local news, with stations pushing newscasts to as early as 4 a.m.
