WASHINGTON President Barack Obama says music is often one place where people turn during trying times, both for comfort and for inspiration.

He spoke Wednesday during a White House tribute for singer-songwriter Carole King. She is the first woman to receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Obama says the people of Oklahoma "suffered mightily" this week after a powerful tornado reduced much of the town of Moore to rubble and killed 24 people.

He says the government will help with the recovery and rebuilding effort for as long as it takes and that eventually life will go on and new songs will be sung.
