Last Man Sentenced in Sheppard AFB Contracts Scam

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) A former engineer at a North Texas military installation has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for his part in a bribery case involving base road and roofing contracts.

Former Sheppard Air Force Base engineer Larry Thomas Ballard was sentenced Friday in Wichita Falls for two conspiracy counts. The 60-year-old Wichita Falls man is the fourth and last man to be sentenced in a case surrounding contracts for the Wichita Falls-area air base.

John Torrance Gilmore III of Wichita Falls, Sheppard's former lead supervisory engineer, received the maximum 5-year term in May for his leading role in the conspiracy. Contractors John Carmon Freeman of Vernon and Miguel Angel Hughes of Fort Worth also received prison sentences - Freeman, a 1½-year term, and Hughes, an 8-month term.
