Born to Frederick Henry and Florence Dillinger Steusoff in Liberty, Texas, in 1923, she was the granddaughter of Lucretia Clayton and Joachim Frederick Henry Steusoff and great-granddaughter of John Winston Clayton of Liberty, the recipient of an original Spanish Land Grant from the Mexican Government in the early 1800s. She graduated from Liberty High School and Texas State College for Women (Texas Woman's University) with a bachelor's of music degree. She taught public school music in Orange Independent School District and Liberty Independent School District for over 20 years and co-founded and taught in Liberty's first private Christian school, School of the Redeemer. Her love of music led her to Hungary in 1979 to study the Kodaly technique of music education. June served as president more than once of the Liberty Parent Teacher Association, Liberty Junior Trivium Club, Liberty Trivium Club and the Liberty County American Cancer Society. She was an active member of Daughters of the King, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Liberty County Historical Society, Liberty Garden Club, Harris County Heritage Society, PEO, Bryan Woman's Club, Bryan-College Station Hospice, Kodaly Educators and Texas Music Educators. In the 1940s, she was named Liberty County Fair Queen and in 1956, was a Liberty County finalist in the Mrs. America Contest in Dallas. She also served as accompanist for the Liberty Lions Club, the Liberty Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellows Award. She was a devoted wife of 59 years, nurturing mother, an excellent cook and hostess who loved to entertain, a passionate bridge player and an avid needle-pointer. She survived three different malignancies without chemotherapy or radiation and was instrumental in initiating fundraisers for the Liberty County Cancer Society. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Liberty, Texas, where she served as organist for over 30 years and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church Baytown, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church Houston and St. Andrews Episcopal Church Bryan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry Lloyd McGuire; and granddaughter, Jo Ann McGuire. Survivors include her sister, Gwendolyn Steusoff Hardy of Huntsville; four children, Frederick McGuire and wife, Staci, Charles McGuire and wife, Sarah, Molly McAdams and husband, John, all of Liberty, Texas, and LuAnne Carter and husband, Jay, of Houston; eight grandchildren, Rick McGuire of Austin, Melissa McGuire Patrick of Belton, Texas, Harry Lloyd McGuire of Washington, D.C., Meghan McGuire of Houston, Alexis Carter of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, John Clayton Carter of Nacogdoches, John Cameron Carter of Houston and Katherine and Annie McAdams of Liberty, Texas; and two great-granddaughters, Emily and Kelly Patrick of Belton, Texas. Memorials may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 2041 Trinity, Liberty, Texas 77575; American Cancer Society; or the Houston Hospice, Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030. Memorial services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, located at 2041 Trinity in Liberty, Texas.
