Gladys Manthei, 84, of Bryan, passed away Monday, August 17, 2009 in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 20, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral Services are set for 11 a.m. Friday, August 21, at the funeral home. The Reverend Karl Tewold will officiate. Interment will follow at Wheelock Cemetery. Gladys married Ludwig Manthei in Kurten, Texas in 1944. They moved to Bryan in 1970 and Gladys worked in the food services department at Cain Hall for Texas A&M University. She was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Bryan. Her hobbies included dancing, gardening, crocheting and making homemade quilts. Her biggest love though was for her family. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Ludwig Emil Manthei; her parents, Frank Vytopil and Albina Cech Vytopil; two brothers and one sister. Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-laws, Ludy and Sally Manthei, of Bryan, Teddy and Donna Manthei, of Bremond, Texas, and Gary and Debbie Manthei, of Sugarland, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mark Mikulec, of Livingston, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Shirley Vytopil, of Camp Creek, Texas; sisters and brother-in-law, Rosie Rice, of Hearne, Texas, and Lil and Wade Oshields, of Bryan; sister-in-law, Aline Scasta, of Bryan; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
