After leading Hearne schools district to dramatic rating improvements, Superintendent David Deaver has announced his retirement.

The Hearne school board confirms Deaver will be stepping down in 2009 at the end of the school year.

Deaver led a resurgence in scholastic achievement in Hearne this year. After years of low scores, Hearne raised its TAKS scores by more than 30 percent.

Out of the five years David Deaver was superintdent in Hearne three of those years a school was either low performing or the district was low performing. Has it ever occurred to anyone that maybe the pressure from the school board to bring up those scores and hire qualified personnel was what drove Deaver to leave. And some of your forget that the community floated the bond for our new schools. They deserve the credit and the teachers and the parents deserve the credit for the TAKS scores this year. I worked any Hearne several years and the students at HISD are no different than any other students at other schools. And as for the comment of whether we have ever been acceptable. Look at the years before Deaver came to Hearne. I say goodby and so long.

Hearne high school is finally recognized and the district is acceptable. Has that every happened before? Someone was doing something right, let's hope it continues.

yes, former student, you are correct in part that the students didn't leave just because there was a black superintendent. however, many left because the black superintendent didn't support them equally. the former superintendent was either a family friend or church member of many of the troubled students families, therefore he wouldn't discipline them. this created an enviroment that became increasing unsafe. most of the caring parents( black, white, and hispanic)then pulled their children. this occurred before mr. deaver was even heard of in this district. the uneducated and racially charged school board apparently waited until mr. deaver improved the scores, and the facilities, and now hopes to take the credit. unfortunately for the children, this will leave the children in the hands of the original problem. the problem being the wrong people in the wrong places and there only because of skin color. you may never admit it, but in your heart you can't deny it.

Oh, I have a life "former hearne student" but thank you for caring anyway. I lived in hearne a long time and know full well about the thugs. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

People did not leave Hearne because of the black Superintendent. They left because they did not want their kiddos to go to school with black people. I am a product of Hearne schools and did very well. To the individual that says Hearne is full of thugs needs to get a life. I am excited in the fact that Hearne is doing better, and will continue to get better. Hearne has great teachers and administrators that have worked with the students for years to ensure that Hearne schools are a positive learning environment. I am thankful for my Hearne education.

What I see below, with one exception, are poorly written comments. Most appear to come from uneducated responders. They are probably the parents of some of the students in that district. After reading the only educated comment, it appears to me that the comment hit the nail on the head. There are those that pay zero taxes but expect all the amenities. There are those that do not parent, yet expect the district to raise, teach, and feed their child. All the while, they draw a "paycheck" from the government. A child gains little desire from such an enviroment. Many end up following suit, and turn to drugs or crime. Mr. Deaver must have done an exceptional job in that situation. I wish him well, and expect he'll be happier once he leaves. With a school board elected on race rather than qualifications, how could anyone succeed. We, the Brazos Valley, will be watching to see if the next superintendent can improve on Mr. Deaver's work. I am willing to bet not.

This just shows you how dumb this school board is, allowing this to happen. The truth is they forced him to make this choice or get canned. The man has only helped you get new schools and the most important thing, put the correct staff in place to bring up your test scores, which usually sucked. Way to go Hearne

Mr. Deaver has done a wonderful job given the situation he faced. The school board is comprised of literally members that can not read, to some that struggled in school, to 1-2 educated members. There was racial animocity throughout his term. Let us not forget that the previous black superintendent drove away the white students and the scores failed, while Mr. Deaver fought to create a learning enviroment with the students that remained. I hope the district will maintain its push, but fear the inapt board will fill the seat based on color rather than qualifications thus returning the district to the laughing stock of the brazos valley. Hearne's schools were once as good as any district in the area, but with the best students removed due to lack of equal treatment because they are not black, it has and will continue to struggle. Its shameful that so many only view racism as white against black when it seems to occur now more black against white. The "its our turn" mentality.
