Texas A&M University
Players to watch - Offense
Johnny Manziel
All eyes will be on Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel who is making his first career starts at Texas A&M. Manziel will lead an A&M offense that will play at a very fast tempo. In his senior season at Kerville Tive, Manziel threw for 45 touchdowns and ran for 30 more. He was named a Parade All-American and the National High School Coach Association Football Player of the Year.
Players to watch - Defense
Sean Porter
While Manziel is getting set for his first start, linebacker Sean Porter will be making his 29th start Satruday afternoon. Porter will try to help the Aggie defense slow down a Floirda offense that put up 365 yards last week including 220 yards on the ground. Porter's senior leadership should help an Aggie defense that has four freshman listed on the two deep depth chart. A year ago, Porter led the big 12 conference with nine and a half sacks.
Keys to the Game
Porter will need get pressure on Gator quarterback Jeff Driskel Saturday. The Florida sophomore is making his first career start at quarterback and if Porter can hit him a few times that could make life very uncomfortable for Driskel.
New head coach Kevin Sumlin's offense is perceived to be one that will throw it all over the yard but don't expect to see the ball in the air on every play. The Aggies have a solid group of running backs and using them Saturday will help move the chains and keep the gator defense off balance.
It should be an amazing atmosphere at Kyle Field Saturday with the first SEC game at Texas A&M and the Aggies can use that to their advantage but, they will have to keep their emotions under control and try to stay somewhat calm and focused. Expect the 12th Man to be loud and present some problems for the gators with communication.
Florida
Players to watch - Offense
Mike Gillislee
With Florida head coach Will Muschamp going with Jeff Driskell at quarterback, the team will likley need to lean on running back Mike Gillislee to be successful Saturday. Gillislee ran for a career high 148 yards on 24 carries in the Gators season opener. He also scored two touchdowns. He will try to have success against an Aggie defense that is moving back to the 4-3 this year after plaing in a 3-4 the last two seasons.
Players to watch - Defense
Jon Bostic
Defensively, expect to see linebacker Jon Bostic around the ball for the Gators. He led Floirda in tackles last week with eight and also recorded a tackle for loss. Bostic entered the season leading all current Gators with 169 tackles.
Keys to the Game
The Gators will have to get things going on the ground Saturday. If they can have a successful rushing attack that will help control the clock and keep the Aggies offense off the field.
Creating turnovers will help Florida's cause Saturday. They had two take aways in their season opener. The Gators are looking for better results in that department after finishing last in the SEC in turnover margin in 2011.
Florida has to cut down on penalties to have a chance to win Saturday. Last week, the Gators had 14 penalties for 106 yards. Ddouble digit penalties will not help your chances of winning on the road.
The Aggies
Texas A&M offically became a member of the Southeatsern Conference on July first. Saturday has been a date fans have had cirlced on the calander. This is the first Southeastern Conferecne game for any sport on campus. This game is made even bigger when you consider the fact it is the home opener and the debut for Kevin Sumlin who is honored to be the head coach at Texas A&M at such an improtant time.
"There's a lot of historical moments in this University and in this football program and, without a doubt, this is one of them," said Kevin Sumlin at his weekly press conference.
"To be the head football coach at this time is really an honor. To run out and not only be our first home game but our first game in the SEC, it's a lot of first going on here," Sumlin continued.
The Gators
Florida opened their 2012 season last saturday at home against Bowling Green. The Falcons put up a fight for much of the contest. The two teams were tied at 14 in the third quarter. The Gators scored the final 13 points of the contest to pick up the 27-14 win. Now, the team is set to play their first ever game in college station.
"It's an SEC-like atmosphere," said Florida head coach Will Muschamp.
"It's going to be very similar to a lot of stadiums that we walk into. We've got some guys who are traveling for the first time and are playing in that atmosphere for the first time, so again I think that our older guys can help with that as well as myself," continued Muschamp.
Saturday will be the Gators 11th game in the state of Texas. They are 1-7-and-2 all time in the Lone Star State.
History
There is not a lot of hisotry between these two programs. The have met twice with each team winning a game. Florida beat Texas A&M 42-6 in Gainsville back in 1962. The Aggies beat the Gators 37-14 in the 1977 Sun Bowl.
