BRENHAM, TX -- Blinn College sophomore Kevin Hahn was named winner of the 2012 Dr. James H. Atkinson Cup recognizing the sophomore student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Hahn, an all-conference pitcher for the Buccaneer baseball team, posted a 4.0 grade point average during his two years at Blinn. After transferring to Blinn from Rice University, Hahn majored in mathematics while at Blinn. He plans to earn his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

The sophomore left-hander out of Houston Stratford High School was 7-1 for the Buccaneers with a 3.04 ERA this season. He recorded 56 strikeouts and just 13 walks over 80 innings.

Hahn and the Buccaneers will play in the Region XIV Tournament beginning Saturday in Mount Pleasant, Texas. The Buccaneers will play Texarkana College in the opening round. The tournament champion advances to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Atkinson Cup, sponsored by the Buccaneer Alumni Letterman Association, began in 2000 to honor the top sophomore student athlete with the highest GPA in a minimum of 48 transferable hours. The award is named for former Blinn athletic director and president Dr. James H. Atkinson.
