BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball coach Jeff Jenkins makes certain to commemorate the occasion whenever one of his teams reaches the 20-win milestone.
But he’s never the landmark quite this quickly.
The 10th-ranked Buccaneers defeated Tyler Junior College 89-75 at the Blinn P.E. Building Wednesday as the team continues to build upon the greatest start in program history. The Buccaneers are now 20-1 on the season.
“Whenever we win our 20th game we take a picture afterwards and I make it my laptop wallpaper,” Jenkins said. “This is definitely the fastest team to get there.”
Freshman forward Fatima Adams led the Buccaneers with 25 points and 10 rebounds despite getting into early foul trouble that limited her to about 20minutes on the night. The Bryan Rudder product was 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
“She drives to the hole and she hits pull-up jumpers,” Jenkins said. “She’s a good low post player too, so she can score in a wide variety of ways. We just need to keep her on the court.”
Adams wasn’t the only Buccaneer forward to find success. Sophomore Audrisa Harrison scored 21 points, and Shanequa Gaston came off the bench to add 14.
“Tyler’s posts were bigger than us and they hurt us some inside, but it’s hard to guard our posts on the perimeter,” Jenkins said. “They’re like guards that play post, so sometimes it’s hard for a 6-1 or 6-2 post to guard them.”
Freshman Amari Jones scored 10 points and sophomore guard Jazzmin Parker scored all nine of her points in the first half.
Blinn trailed 43-42 at halftime.
“I thought we played better defense in the second half,” Jenkins said. “We made it a little tougher for them to score, and when you get defensive stops you can push the floor a little more.”
The win improved the Buccaneers to 6-1 in the Region XIV Conference. Tyler fell to 8-11 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
The Buccaneers host San Jacinto College at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building.
