ALVIN, Texas – It was a rocky opener for the Blinn Buccaneer baseball team here Friday afternoon.
The Alvin Dolphins defeated Blinn 9-0 in both teams’ season opener as Jacob Lara picked up the victory for the Dolphins while holding the Bucs to four hits.
“There were a lot of teachable moments,” Blinn (0-1, 0-1 in Region XIV) coach Harvey McIntyre said, “and you’ve got to give Alvin credit. They didn’t play like it was their first game out of the gates.”
Freshman Eric Wood had two of Blinn’s four hits, while Hayden Vesely and Eric Preuss added base hits.
Sophomore Kevin Hahn threw 3 1/3 innings for the Bucs, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and a walk.
“Kevin threw the ball well, we just gave away some outs and they got a chance to create some big innings,” McIntyre said. “Kevin threw the ball better than the line score showed.”
Trent Rape threw the final 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out four.
“That’s the best he’s thrown the ball since he got here,” McIntyre said. “He came in and they had all the momentum, but he got two punch outs to end the inning. It’s great to see a young kid come out and do that.”
The three-game series concludes Saturday with a noon double-header at Alvin. Christian DeLeon and Trevor Seidenberger are slated to pitch for the Bucs.
