PORT ARTHUR, Texas – It took a last-second buzzer beater to finally separate the Blinn Buccaneers and Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks here Wednesday night.
A layup as time expired gave Lamar State a 70-68 victory over the Buccaneers in a game between two of the three teams that entered the night tied for the Region XIV South Zone lead. With the win, Lamar State improves to 14-4 in conference play while the Buccaneers fell to 13-5 with one regular-season game remaining before the Region XIV Tournament. San Jacinto also entered the night tied atop the zone standings.
“Our guys fought hard,” Blinn head coach Tra Arnold said. “We don’t like the way it ended, but they played their hearts out.”
With four seconds remaining, Lamar State dribbled down the court, passed the ball twice and scored on a layup.
The loss ended a seven-game win streak for the Buccaneers. Blinn will conclude its regular season Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip-off against Lee College.
The conference tournament will be held March 7-11 at Tyler Junior College.
