BRENHAM, TX -- The Blinn College men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete for a berth to the NJCAA National Championships this week as they participate in the Region XIV Conference Tournament in Tyler, Texas.
The Blinn men enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face 12th-seeded Coastal Bend College in a first-round game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Blinn’s women enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed in the women’s bracket and will face third-seeded Paris Junior College at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The Buccaneer men enter the tournament with a 23-5 record after going 13-5 in conference play. The Bucs have won eight of their last nine games and are coming off a 76-68 victory over Lee College on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Titus Rubles leads Blinn with 15.0 points per game and a conference-high 9.7 rebounds per contest. Sophomore forward
Joel Wright is averaging 14.9 points per game and freshman guard Daishon Knight is posting 14.1 points per contest. Sophomore guard Miles Dixon is averaging 12.1 points per game and shooting 35 percent from 3-point territory.
Coastal Bend defeated Angelina 76-73 in a play-in game Monday to qualify for the regional tournament. Coastal Bend does not play a Region XIV schedule, but is granted the opportunity to qualify for the conference tournament via a play-in game vs. the 12th seed. Coastal Bend will be a full-fledged conference member next season.
The Buccaneer women enter the tournament with a 21-9 record after going 9-9 during conference play. Blinn has won six of its last eight games heading into the tournament.
Buccaneer forwards Shaniqua Dogins and Valencia White are tied for the conference lead in rebounding, averaging 9.5 per game, and Dogins is the squad’s top scorer with 12.7 points per game. Sophomore point guard Miki Turner has chipped in 11.2 points per game and sophomore guard Denise White is averaging 11.0 points.
Paris (24-6) defeated Blinn in both their meetings this season, including a 66-61 loss in Brenham Wednesday night.
