BRENHAM, TX -- After a 34-day layoff, the Blinn Buccaneers shook off the rust with a lopsided 107-64 victory over Lone Star College-Tomball here Tuesday afternoon at the Blinn College P.E. Building.
Sophomore forward Titus Rubles led the Buccaneers with a game-high 20 points, but it was his defensive effort that most impressed Blinn (12-2) head coach Tra Arnold.
“He rotated, he blocked shots, he rebounded – he did a good job for us in that regard,” Arnold said. “I thought he played even better defensively than he did offensively. I was more impressed with that part of his game.”
Rubles was one of six Buccaneers to score in double digits. Sophomore guard Miles Dixon scored 17 points and freshman Shamel Williams and sophomore Joel Wright each added 13. Guards C.J. Smith and Dre Evans each scored 12 as the Buccaneers jumped out to a 58-33 lead by halftime.
Arnold admitted the Buccaneers were a little rusty in the early going, but the action got smoother as the game went along.
“It’s going to take time to be what we want to be,” Arnold said. “You take three weeks off, that’s a long time, and when you get back it’s like starting over. It’s just going to take some time.”
Blinn was without freshman point guard Daishon Knight, who was held out with a minor thumb injury.
The Buccaneers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Lone Star College Cy-Fair for a 5 p.m. tip-off. After that, the Bucs return to Region XIV Conference play with a home game against Lamar State-Port Arthur on Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building. Tip-off for that contest is set for 4 p.m.
The Buccaneers are 3-1 in conference play.
