BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers are Region XIV South Zone champions for the fourth consecutive year.
Blinn defeated Lamar State-Port Arthur 11-3 and 6-4 to conclude the regular season with a 45-8 record and a 21-3 mark in conference play. The eighth-ranked Buccaneers will now enter the Region XIV Tournament as the No. 1 seed out of the South.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early lead in the opener, scoring six first-inning runs.
Kristina Davila drove in three runs in the contest, while Tiffani McKnight and Ryan Jones added RBIs. Thomasina Garza drove in a run to end the game via mercy rule in the fifth inning.
Sophmore Kaci Federwisch earned the win to improve to 22-6 on the season.
Garza came up with another big hit in the second game, as her two-run home run in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. Shelby Harris scored Michelle Svehla on a squeeze play to add an insurance run in the sixth.
Leandra Maly went 3-for-3 with an RBI and McKnight added an RBI sacrifice fly.
Jocelyn Tacquard started the game for the Bucs, giving way to Shannon Sain (13-1) in the sixth inning. Sain would earn the win, but it was Federwisch who came on with two outs in the sixth inning to shut the door and earn the save.
The Region XIV Tournament will be held May 3-6 at Angelina College in Lufkin. The winner of that tournament will advance to the NJCAA National Championships in St. George, Utah.
