HOUSTON – The Blinn Buccaneer women’s basketball team won its fourth consecutive game since returning from the Christmas break with a 65-57 victory over the San Jacinto Lady Gators.
Freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins (Rice Consolidated) scored 16 points and sophomore guard Denise White (Baytown Sterling) added 15 to lead the Buccaneers.
The win improved Blinn’s record to 13-2 on the year and 3-2 in the Region XIV Conference.
“I think they’re starting to get a little bit more confidence,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “There’s a lot of difference between a first- and second-semester freshman, and I think Shaniqua is playing better this semester. I think she just feels more comfortable.”
In Blinn’s four games this semester, Dogins has recorded three double-doubles.
The Lady Gators took an eight-point lead early in the first half, but after Dogins got into foul trouble, freshman Breanna Barnett (Elkins), a backup post, entered the game and hit back-to-back jump shots to help the Bucs cut San Jacinto’s halftime lead to 34-32.
In the second half, the Buccaneers held the Lady Gators to just 23 points.
“I thought San Jac made plays in the first half,” Jenkins said. “In the second half, we got some stop and it allowed us to push the ball and convert some transition shots. I just think this team’s defense gets better as the game goes on.”
Sophomore forward Valencia White (Conroe) scored 10 points, and sophomore forward Alycea Price (Lamar) added six points while taking two big charges for the Buccaneers
“She made a lot of defensive plays tonight,” Jenkins said.
After playing its first four games of the semester on the road, Blinn returns to its home court Wednesday with a non-conference game against LSU-Eunice at 5:30 p.m. The Buccaneers will return to Region XIV action on Jan. 21 with a 2 p.m. tip-off against Tyler Junior College in the Blinn P.E. Building.
