WACO, Texas – The Blinn College women’s basketball team kicked off the 2012 season in style here Friday afternoon, knocking off the previously undefeated Hill College Lady Rebels 75-60 at the McLennan College Classic.
Hill, led by the efforts of 6-foot-4 forward Aron Garcia, was off to a 14-0 start to the season and was ranked 14th in the nation, but thanks to a strong second-half defensive effort the Bucs were able to pull away late.
“It’s a big win for us,” Blinn (10-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said.
The Lady Bucs led just 37-36 at halftime, but Buccaneer forwards Valencia White (Conroe) and Shaniqua Dogins (Rice Consolidated) combined to hold Garcia to just four points in the second half.
Sophomore guard Denise White (Baytown Sterling) led the Bucs with a game-high 17 points.
“She’s making her 15-footer up the middle right now,” Jenkins said. “She’s always able to drive to the hole, and then she started hitting her pull-up jumper. If she’s shooting her pull-up jumper well, she’s tough to guard.”
Sophomore point guard Miki Turner (McArthur) and Dogins each scored 14 points, while sophomore guard Christie Mooney (Pflugerville) added 12 and Valencia White scored eight.
“We hit shots, there’s no doubt,” Jenkins said. “It makes it a lot easier when you hit shots. You have a great chance to win if you score 75.”
Blinn faces Western Texas on the second day of the Classic at 1 p.m. Saturday, then returns to Region XIV Conference play against Panola at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Carthage, Texas.
