CARTHAGE, TX -- The Blinn Buccaneer women’s basketball team evened its Region XIV Conference record here Wednesday night, defeating Panola College 77-73 to improve to 12-2 on the season.
The Buccaneers evened their conference record at 2-2 with the victory.
“We needed this one,” Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins said. “With two conference road games back-to-back, this was a big one.”
It certainly wasn’t easy Wednesday night. The Buccaneers led by 10 points with five minutes to go, but the Fillies rallied back, cutting Blinn’s lead to two points in the game’s final moments. With five seconds left, the Buccaneers’ inbounds pass slipped through their fingers, allowing Panola to steal the ball and take a wide-open shot from the top of the key.
But Panola’s shot missed, and Blinn guard Joslinn Douglas grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Douglas made both her free throws to produce the final score.
“It was a grind-it-out type of win,” Jenkins said. “We made enough plays to hang on.”
Freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins led the Buccaneers with a game-high 22 points. She scored 14 in the second half.
“She played really well,” Jenkins said, noting that Dogins added at least 10 rebounds on the night.
Sophomore guard Denise White scored 16 and sophomore point guard Miki Turner added 14.
Panola, which was coming off a victory over eighth-ranked Weatherford, was led by 12 points from sophomore guard Oditte Odisho.
The Buccaneers continue Region XIV play Saturday when they travel to Houston for a 2 p.m. game against San Jacinto.
