EUNICE, La. – The Blinn Buccaneers’ fast-paced offense proved far superior to the LSU-Eunice Bengals’ efforts to slow the ballgame down Wednesday night.
The Blinn women's basketball team defeated LSU-Eunice 69-30 to win its 12th and final non-conference game, making it the first Buccaneer squad in head coach Jeff Jenkins’ 10 years to win all its non-conference contests.
“We try to play a pretty tough non-conference schedule, so that doesn’t happen very often,” Jenkins said. “Even in 2008 when we won 26 games, we lost one in non-conference play.”
The Buccaneers have relied on a stingy man defense all season, and Wednesday’s contest was no exception as Blinn held LSU-Eunice to just 12 points in the second half. Blinn led 32-18 by halftime.
“They really tried to slow the game down,” Jenkins said. “They used quite a bit of shot clock, but every time we got a stop we tried to run the floor. It was kind of a weird game because they tried to slow it down while we went full throttle.”
Rebekah Cluley came off the bench to hit all three of her 3-point attempts, and Miki Turner also scored nine. Denise White added seven.
The Buccaneers’ entire roster got in the game.
Blinn returns to Region XIV Conference play Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Tyler Junior College. The Bucs will conclude the regular season Monday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Paris Junior College. That game will be Blinn’s sophomore night.
The Region XIV Conference Tournament will be held March 8-11 at Tyler Junior College. The Bucs are 9-7 in conference play, good for fourth place.
