Buccaneers go 4-1 at Midland Classic
No. 4 Blinn shuts out Western Texas to cap tournament
MIDLAND, Texas – The fourth-ranked Blinn College softball team split the final day of the Midland College Classic to finish with a 4-1 record in the two-day showcase.
Blinn lost to Midland 10-6, then run-ruled Western Texas 8-0 in six innings. The Buccaneers won all three of their games on Saturday.
Sophomore outfielder Ryan Jones hit a three-run home run and freshman Leandra Maly piled up three hits and drove in a run, but the Buccaneers committed four errors which led to seven unearned runs for Midland.
Freshman Tiffani McKnight continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a double, and freshman Brooke Riemann also added two hits.
Sophomore pitcher Kaci Federwisch took the loss.
Freshman Shannon Sain improved to 4-0 on the season with the win over Western Texas, but she left the game with an arm injury after two innings. Blinn was already without sophomore Jocelyn Tacquard, who is also out with an injury.
“Those injuries and the depth of our pitching staff right now greatly concern me,” Blinn (7-4) coach Rick Church said.
Federwisch came on and struck out five Western Texas batters in four shutout innings of relief.
Freshman Shelbe Sterling went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a three-run home run to finish with four RBIs for the game.
Blinn is off until the Temple College Round Robin on Friday.
