Buccaneers win third straight
Blinn evens conference record with 53-50 victory
JACKSONVILLE, Texas – The Blinn College women’s basketball team picked up its third consecutive victory Saturday with a 53-50 road win over Jacksonville College.
Sophomore guard Denise White stole the ball and returned it to the other end of the floor for a layup with less than a minute to go to produce the final score, and the Buccaneer defense didn’t allow Jacksonville to get off a final shot.
“We made just enough plays to win the game,” Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins said. “Defensively, we made some big stops down the stretch.”
All of Blinn’s points came from five players as freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins scored 13, Christie Mooney scored 11, Denise White and Valencia White each reached double digits with 10 points and point guard Miki Turner added nine.
Breanna Burford scored 14 points to lead Jacksonville, but scored just two points in the second half. The game marked the Lady Jaguars’ homecoming.
“It’s not always pretty, but we’re finding a way to win,” Jenkins said.
Blinn improved to 18-7 on the season and 7-7 in the Region XIV Conference, while Jacksonville fell to 5-20 for the season and 2-12 in conference.
The Buccaneers will play back-to-back home games at the Blinn P.E. Building this week, hosting Angelina College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off Wednesday and Kilgore College for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday.
