BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn College baseball team won both games of a Region XIV Conference double-header against the Wharton County Pioneers Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field.
The Buccaneers defeated Wharton County 8-1 and 13-6 on “Turn Back the Clock Day,” in which the Bucs wore uniforms replicating those worn by Blinn College teams in the 1920s and ‘30s. Proceeds from the event benefitted Adam's Angels Ministry, a non-profit organization that reaches out to families that have been affected by childhood cancer.
Blinn began hosting Turn Back the Clock Days in 2009 as a fundraiser for local charities. In previous years, the event has raised money for community organizations such as Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, the Brazos Valley Hospice and Washington County Little League.
The Buccaneers won the opening game behind a dominant performance from left-hander Wesley Wick, who allowed just three hits in a complete-game effort. Wick allowed one earned run while walking three and striking out three.
He got three runs of quick support from the Buccaneers in the opening inning, including an RBI single from Kevin Santana. Blinn broke the game open in the fifth as Taylor Cobb hit a two-run single and Cullen Gassaway added an RBI single in a five-run rally.
Cobb finished 2-for-2 and Scott Jones was 2-for-4.
Blinn fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap before rallying for five runs in the fifth. From there, the Bucs scored three in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth. In all, nine different Buccaneers drove in runs.
Gassaway and Hayden Vesely each had three hits and a pair of RBIs on the day, and Tyler Coker was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Colin Fry, Brandon Montalvo and Santana each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jones was 2-for-5 with a run driven in.
Kyle Mueller pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for Blinn, allowing three runs – two earned – on five hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Robert Dickey earned the win in relief, throwing 3 2/3 innings. Dickey allowed three runs – one earned – on four hits while striking out seven. J.C. Neighbors threw the final three innings, holding Wharton County scoreless on three hits. He struck out three.
The Buccaneers host McLennan for a 3 p.m. double-header Tuesday at Leroy Dreyer Field.
