In a back-and-forth game, the Blinn College women’s basketball team found a way to win.
Behind a 43-point performance from sophomore Fatima Adams, a 38-for-43 team showing from the free throw line and a strong defensive outing, the Buccaneers beat the Kilgore Lady Rangers 92-88 in double overtime Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building.
“To beat Bossier Parish Wednesday and to beat Kilgore tonight when Kilgore played really well was really good for us,” Blinn (9-2, 2-0 Region XIV) coach Jeff Jenkins said. “It’s much better to go into the Christmas break with a conference win rather than a loss.”
Blinn battled back from a 36-34 halftime deficit to tie the game at 67 at the end of regulation. After the teams were unable to break a 75-75 tie after an extra five-minute period, the Buccaneers pulled away with a minute remaining in the second overtime. They’ve now won eight straight.
Adams’ 43 points was a career-high in her two years at Blinn. She was 16 of 17 from the free throw line on the night.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a player score 40 points or more,” Jenkins said. “She was not going to let us lose. She knew she was the best offensive player on the floor and she showed it.”
Katrina Hayden assisted offensively with 16 points and was 12 of 13 from the charity stripe.
The Bucs shot 88 percent from the free throw line in the game.
Though it was a high-scoring affair, Jenkins was pleased with the effort his defense turned in. Freshmen Shakera Barnes and Brianna Luton, as well as sophomore Shunta Nevitt, combined to disrupt Kilgore’s guards. Sophomore Shanequa Gaston, who scored seven points, helped control the boards.
“We played as good defensively as we have all season,” Jenkins said. “We’re only going to get better from here.”
