BRENHAM, TX -- Three days after a taking down the top ranked team in the nation, the Buccaneer football team took over the No. 1 spot in this week’s NJCAA Football poll, earning 138 points and 5 first place votes. Arizona Western, who the Buccaneers defeated 31-27 in the 2010 CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl, moved into the No. 2 spot with two first place votes.
The Buccaneers are still riding high after Saturday’s 31-26 victory over the then No. 1 ranked Navarro Bulldogs in front of 2,243 fans at Cub Stadium in Brenham. The win marked the fourth consecutive time the Buccaneers have knocked-off a No. 1 opponent since 2009, as they defeated No. 1 Butler in 2008 and 2009, as well as Navarro in the 2009 SWJCFC title game. The 2009 team went on to win the schools fourth national championship, led by All-American quarterback Cam Newton, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in the NFL draft this past June.
Blinn currently ranks first in the conference and eighth in the nation in offense, averaging 493 yards per game. Sophomore running back Marion Grice (Aldine Nimitz) is sixth in the NJCAA in rushing, averaging 121 yards per game and 11 total touchdowns.
At 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference play, the Bucs sit atop the standings with No. 8 Trinity Valley Community College, who is also 5-0 on the season. The two will face-off on Oct. 15 at Cub Stadium in Brenham for Blinn’s Homecoming.
The Bucs will next host Tyler Junior College on Oct. 8 at Bryan High’s Merrill Green Stadium. This marks the third consecutive season the Bucs have played a home game in Bryan, home of the school’s largest campus with over 13,000 students. Kick-off for the SWJCFC game is set for 7 p.m.
