BRENHAM, TX -- This marks the sixth consecutive year that the Buccaneers begin the season as a top 10 team in the NJCAA poll. The Buccaneers have won the NJCAA championship four times (1995, 1996, 2006 and 2009). The 2009 team was led by quarterback Cam Newton, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in the NFL draft this past June.
This will be the first season as head coach for Ronny Feldman, who helped guide the Buccaneer’s nationally ranked offense over the past four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/receivers coach. He will continue those duties this year as head coach.
The Buccaneers are coming off an 8-3 2010 season, highlighted by a 31-27 victory over Arizona Western College in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl and No. 10 final season ranking.
Blinn will kick-off the 2011 season on the road Aug. 25 against Fort Scott (KS) Community College, the team in which the Buccaneers defeated 31-26 in the 2009 Citizens Bank Bowl to win their fourth national championship. The Buccaneers will play their first home game on Sept. 2, as they face SE Preps (Houston) at 7 p.m. at Cub Stadium.
Other Southwest Junior College Football Conference teams in the Top 25 Poll are Navarro (No. 1), Trinity Valley (No. 14) and Cisco (No. 22). Defending SWJCFC and National Champion Navarro squares off against No. 3 Butler on August 25th, in a rematch of the 2010 NJCAA Football Championship Game.
