Buccaneers complete three-game sweep of Alvin
Carr’s diving catch caps wild day for Blinn baseball

BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Alvin Community College Saturday with 8-0 and 11-9 victories over the Dolphins at Leroy Dreyer Field.
Sophomore right-hander Jason Simms threw six shutout and freshman Karl Malecek threw a scoreless seventh in Saturday’s opening contest, and the Buccaneers held on thanks to a diving catch by sophomore left fielder Markus Carr in the second game to complete the sweep. Blinn won the series opener on Friday, 10-4.
The Bucs had double-digit hits in all three games of the series.
“It’s huge to get a great start to the second half of conference,” Blinn coach Harvey McIntyre said.
Simms scattered six hits and struck out five to earn the win in the opener, and freshman Hayden Vesely led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double.
Jake Kane went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Quinton Evans also went 2-for-4. Kevin Daniels drove in a pair of runs and Eric Wood added an RBI as he went 1-for-3.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early lead in the second game, taking a 9-4 lead that they extended to 11-4 on a two-run double by Vesely.
“I thought that was the difference in the baseball game,” McIntyre said. “You never know which run is going to win it.”
Alvin battled back to cut Blinn’s lead to 11-9 and had runners on first and third when, with two outs, Carr tracked down a fly ball down the left field, making a spectacular diving catch to end the game.
“If that ball gets by him we’re probably still playing,” McIntyre said.
Kevin Hahn threw the first 6 1/3 innings to earn the win, while Christian de Leon threw two innings in relief and Taylor Cobb recorded the final two outs to earn the save.
Kane and Vesely each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Tyler Boss was 2-for-3 with a triple. Holden Cammack hit a two-run double and Carr added a double as the Bucs improved to 18-10 on the season and 11-8 in the Region XIV Conference.
The Buccaneers are now off until Friday, when they will travel to Wharton County Community College, then host the Pioneers for two more games on Saturday. Game times for those contests have yet to be determined.
