(ST. GEORGE, UT) – After an remarkable run of four wins in yesterday’s tournament action, the Blinn Buccaneers season came to an end today, falling to No. 5 Tallahassee College 8-6 at the 2011 NJCAA Division I Women’s Fastpitch National Championship tournament at the Canyons Complex in St. George, UT.
Tallahassee set the tone of the game early on, leading off the first, third and fourth innings with solo home runs. A four run fourth inning would then give Tallahassee a commanding 8-2 lead at the mid-way point.
After scoring two runs in the first on RBI singles by Alex Yarbrough (SO, Boerne) and Michelle Downing (SO, Clements), the Bucs were held scoreless until the fifth, scoring one run on a RBI single by Nicole Mack (SO, Lake Jackson). The Bucs then cut the lead to two on a three run blast by Yarbrough in the sixth. The Bucs attempted another come-from-behind rally in the seventh, but stranded two runners, ending the season and their hopes for the school’s first national championship.
Blinn (55-8) finishes the tournament with a 4-2 record and a 4th place overall finish in the national tournament.
Today’s contest marked the final game as Buccaneers for sophomores Downing, Mack, Yarbrough, Brittany Arredondo (Canyon Lake), Alyssa Vordenbaum (Pasadena), Ariel Gomez (Sealy), Tara Bell (Baytown), Sara Vaughn (Huntsville), Jalyn Erwin (Sweeny) and Lindsey Marik (El Campo).
