BRENHAM, TX -- Four Blinn College basketball players received All-Region XIV accolades and nine were named all-conference after both the men and women surpassed the 20-win plateau and earned victories at the Region XIV Conference Tournament.
The Buccaneer men reached new heights in 2011, advancing to the Region XIV Tournament finals for the first time in school history and finishing the season with a 27-7 record. Those 25 victories also set a new program mark.
Sophomore forward Titus Rubles led the way with 14.5 points and a team-high 9.8 rebounds per game, earning him first-team all-region and all-conference honors. Rubles has committed to the University of Cincinnati.
Sophomore forward Joel Wright led the Buccaneers in scoring with 15.3 points per game and added 6.9 rebounds per contest to earn first-team all-region and all-conference recognition.
Freshman guard Daishon Knight was a third-team all-region and a second-team all-conference honoree after posting 13.6 points and 2.8 assists per game.
Sophomore guard Miles Dixon was a third-team all-conference selection, averaging 12.9 points and 2.4 assists per game, and Dre Evans was named third-team all-conference after posting 8.6 points and a team-high 3.4 assists.
“These guys bought into the program,” Blinn coach Tra Arnold said.
“They did the little things that it takes for a team to succeed, and they were rewarded for it.”
The Buccaneer women also made history in 2012, posting their first 20-win season in four years on their way to a 22-10 record.
Freshman forward Shaniqua Dogins was named to the all-region and all-conference teams after averaging 12.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Dogins suffered a torn ACL in Blinn’s final game of the regular season, forcing her to miss the conference tournament, but coach Jeff Jenkins said the Eagle Lake product already has several offers from Division I programs. Dogins’ 273 rebounds this season marked the ninth most in Blinn history.
Sophomore point guard Miki Turner earned all-conference honors after she posted 11.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists per game.
Sophomore forward Valencia White led the Buccaneers with 9.25 rebounds per game and 51 steals on the season. Her 296 rebounds for the year is the sixth most in program history, and her 517 career rebounds make her Blinn’s fourth-leading all-time rebounder. She also averaged 6.8 points per game.
Sophomore guard Denise White earned all-conference honors with 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
“I was proud of them,” Jenkins said. “Our sophomores played very hard, and they continued to get better throughout their two years here.”
