After finishing the season with an impressive 51-6 record and a third consecutive Region XIV title, the Blinn College softball team travels to the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch National Tournament in St. George, UT May 19-21 in search of the program’s first national championship. It will mark the Buccaneers third consecutive trip to the national tournament and fifth overall appearance. Their highest finish came in 2003 as the national champion runner-up. In 2010, Blinn finished fourth in the nation with a 45-11 record and No. 10 final ranking.
Led by one of the top pitching staffs in the country, the Bucs’ have four starters with ERA’s under 2.00 and three with 13 or more wins.
Sophomores Tara Bell (Baytown) and Alyssa Vordenbaum (Pasadena Memorial) lead the team with 28 combined wins, with Vordenbaum leading the staff with a 1.11 ERA in 101 innings pitched.
Brenham High School graduate Kaci Federwisch finished the regular season with an 13-2 mark and 1.51 ERA in what continues to be a stellar freshman season. The former Cub standout has held her opponents to a .188 team batting average, while also leading the Bucs in complete games (14), shutouts (7) and saves (2) in 97 innings pitched.
Freshman Jocelyn Tacquard (Santa Fe) has compiled an 10-1 record with four shutouts in 61 innings pitched this season.
The Buccaneers enter the national tournament as the No. 7 team in the country and No. 3 overall seed in the tournament. They open play on May 19 at 1:00 p.m. versus No. 14 Lake Land College, Ill. (41-10) from Region 24.
