Buccaneers stay atop zone standings with 72-67 win
Wright, Knight each score 19 as Blinn tops Kilgore
BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers held onto both the game and the Region XIV Conference South Zone lead in the closing minutes of Saturday’s 72-67 victory over Kilgore College.
Blinn, which entered the day in a three-way tie for the South Zone lead with San Jacinto and Lamar State-Port Arthur, had to survive two 3-point attempts from the Rangers that would have tied the score before finally securing the rebound and making their free throws to leave the Blinn P.E. Building with the five-point victory.
Sophomore forward Joel Wright and freshman guard Daishon Knight each scored a game-high 19 points.
“We were fortunate to squeak out with the win,” Blinn coach Tra Arnold said.
Blinn got 14 points from guard Miles Dixon.
The Buccaneers came through with clutch free throw shooting, making 22 of 28 from the charity stripe on the afternoon.
“Joel gave us some energy in spurts and made some good plays for us in key situations,” Arnold said. “Daishon made some big shots for us too.”
Jalen Washington and Chinedu Amajoy each scored 11 for Kilgore, which fell to 16-11 on the season and 8-9 in conference play.
The Buccaneers improved to 23-5 on the year and 13-4 in conference. They travel to Port Arthur on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Lamar State in a game that could be crucial in determining the No. 1 seed out of the South Zone for the Region XIV Tournament.
“We’re closing in on March. Every game, the stakes get higher,” Arnold said. “It will be fun.”
