Buccaneers sweep double-header vs. Trinity Valley
Freshman pitcher Sain throws one-hitter in second game
BRENHAM, Texas – Shannon Sain didn’t look like a pitcher who had been battling a shoulder injury for the past week.
Sain struck out eight batters while throwing a one-hit shutout Tuesday night as the fourth-ranked Blinn College softball team completed a double-header sweep over Trinity Valley at Hohlt Park.
Blinn won the first game 10-2 in six innings before Sain threw the complete-game shutout in a 9-0 Blinn victory.
Sain (5-0) had been limited to one-inning relief pitching stints during the Midland Tournament due to a shoulder strain.
“She came in today and got a lot of strikeouts with that high pitch,” Blinn head coach Rick Church said. “Sometimes she’ll throw that screwball inside that looks like a rise ball, and sometimes she really does throw that rise, and they couldn’t lay off that pitch today.”
Sophomore Kaci Federwisch (6-3) earned the win in Game 1.
Freshman outfielder Leandra Maly led the Buccaneers’ offense as the left-handed hitter from Pearland went 6-of-7 for the day, including a double to lead off the second game of the double-header and a pair of infield singles.
Freshman Shelbe Sterling went 4-for-6 and drove in four runs and Thomasina Garza drove in three runs on five hits. Sophomore center fielder Michelle Svehla added three hits on the day, and sophomore outfielder Ryann Jones hit a two-run home run in the opening contest. It was Jones’ second home run of the season.
“She can surprise you,” Church said. “You make a mistake with Ryann and she’ll hurt you.”
The sweep improved the Buccaneers to 14-4 on the season. The Buccaneers will play seven games at the Region XIV Crossover in Longview. That tournament begins Friday and will continue through Sunday.
