BRENHAM, Texas – The league-leading Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks snapped the Blinn College men’s basketball team’s seven-game win streak 72-65 at the Blinn P.E. Building here Saturday.
Sophomore forward Titus Rubles scored 17 points to lead the Buccaneers’ effort, but the Seahawks held Blinn without a field goal for the final seven minutes.
“They found a way to win at the end,” Blinn head coach Tra Arnold said. “They made more plays than we did at the end of the game.”
Freshman point guard Daishon Knight drained three 3-pointers to finish with 14 points and Joel Wright scored 12 for the Buccaneers.
Lamar State was led by Elijah Pittmann, who finished with 22 points despite fouling out with 4:28 to go in the game. He scored 15 points in the first half.
“He’s a good player, one of the most talented kids in our league,” Arnold said.
The game was tied 33-33 at halftime, but the Seahawks got rolling in the second half and a layup by Shondel Stewart gave Lamar State a 65-59 lead with 2:43 remaining in the game. The Buccaneers would rally back via free throws, and a pair by sophomore forward Elijah Jones cut the Seahawks’ lead to 68-65 with 30 seconds remaining.
But Port Arthur made its own free throws in the game’s final moments to hold onto the win.
Blinn fell to 13-3 with the loss and are now 3-2 in Region XIV play. Port Arthur improved to 5-0 in conference and extended its lead in the South Zone.
The Bucs travel to Baytown on Wednesday to play Lee College at 7:30 p.m.
“We’ve got to get back to work and get better,” Arnold said. “That’s the bottom line right now.”
